Summary

Addie and her sister are about to embark on an epic road trip to a friend's wedding in the north of Scotland。 The playlist is all planned and the snacks are packed。

But, not long after setting off, a car slams into the back of theirs。 The driver is none other than Addie's ex, Dylan, who she's avoided since their traumatic break-up two years earlier。

Dylan and his best mate are heading to the wedding too, and they've totalled their car, so Addie has no choice but to offer them a ride。 The car is soon jam-packed full of luggage and secrets, and with three hundred miles ahead of them, Dylan and Addie can't avoid confronting the very messy history of their relationship。。。

Will they make it to the wedding on time? And, more importantly。。。 is this really the end of the road for Addie and Dylan?

It has officially got to the point where I will read anything Beth O’Leary writes; she is so talented and comes up with really unique stories and scenarios。 Granted, I didn’t love this one just as much as The Flatshare but it was still a really enjoyable read with a lovely second chance at love story and great characters。 Perfect escapism。 Thanks to NetGalley and Quercus for this ARC in exchange for an honest review。

The Road Trip tells the story of Dylan and Addie meeting, breaking up, and reconnecting。 They meet again by chance when Dylan rear-ends Addie on the way to their mutual friend’s wedding。 Chapters alternate between Dylan and Addie’s perspectives。 The book also alternates between the past and present, giving readers brief glances at the various stages of Addie and Dylan’s relationship until the reason for their breakup is climactically revealed。 The Road Trip starts off slow, with a lot of furtive The Road Trip tells the story of Dylan and Addie meeting, breaking up, and reconnecting。 They meet again by chance when Dylan rear-ends Addie on the way to their mutual friend’s wedding。 Chapters alternate between Dylan and Addie’s perspectives。 The book also alternates between the past and present, giving readers brief glances at the various stages of Addie and Dylan’s relationship until the reason for their breakup is climactically revealed。 The Road Trip starts off slow, with a lot of furtive glances and whiny car mates in the present and sex and crazy friends in the past。 While there are funny moments, this is not a light romance。 The book is full of toxic relationships that start off bad and get worse。 Seeing how Addie and Dylan’s relationship began really didn’t have me rooting for them to get back together。 Marcus, Dylan’s former best friend along for the road trip, is also like a boogie man throughout the book。 I primarily kept reading to see how Marcus would destroy his life and those around him。 The story picks up about 60% into the book。 Overall, I enjoyed reading this book。 Minor characters like Addie’s sister, Deb, and the road trip tag along, Rodney, added some quirky charm missing from Dylan or Addie。 I would recommend this to someone who likes psychological thrillers more than pure romance。 As a fan of Beth O’Leary, The Road Trip didn’t hit the heart-warming notes that The Flat Share and The Switch did。 Trigger Warning: In addition to toxic relationships, this book deals with other heavy topics like drug/alcohol abuse, depression, sexual assault, homophobia, and stalking。 。。。more

I loved Beth O'Leary's first two books and had high hopes for this one。 While I did enjoy it I didn't enjoy it to the extent that I did the first two。 The main story was interesting and I do like Dylan and Addie, even if I did think communication would have helped them reconcile their differences a lot sooner but that tends to be a theme in chick lit anyway。 The supporting cast are generally okay but the one thing that made me drop a whole star was Marcus, the man was a total arse and people jus I loved Beth O'Leary's first two books and had high hopes for this one。 While I did enjoy it I didn't enjoy it to the extent that I did the first two。 The main story was interesting and I do like Dylan and Addie, even if I did think communication would have helped them reconcile their differences a lot sooner but that tends to be a theme in chick lit anyway。 The supporting cast are generally okay but the one thing that made me drop a whole star was Marcus, the man was a total arse and people just forgave his really bloody awful behaviour。 I would have punched the pr**k in the face tbh and the fact that it felt like he never really suffered any proper consequences from his actions really annoyed me。 But without Marcus I did like the book and I am glad I read it。I was sent this book by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

I'm not sure I can place a finger on exactly why, but this was a rare misstep for me from a writer that I really like。 I think the first issue might be mine alone, in that I really don't like stories with Oxford chums - something about these privileged and usually awful people really makes my skin crawl, and I think they really seem to hold on to nasty teenage nonsense a lot longer than the rest of the population。 It was also too long。 The ending felt like it dragged for me。Rodney was pointless I'm not sure I can place a finger on exactly why, but this was a rare misstep for me from a writer that I really like。 I think the first issue might be mine alone, in that I really don't like stories with Oxford chums - something about these privileged and usually awful people really makes my skin crawl, and I think they really seem to hold on to nasty teenage nonsense a lot longer than the rest of the population。 It was also too long。 The ending felt like it dragged for me。Rodney was pointless until he wasn't and then that was just annoying。 I think it veered a bit too much into farce for me on a few occasions and I don't like a farce unless it's incredibly well done。 There was a bit too much going on which meant that nothing was explored in as much detail as a few key things should have been。 I will still read whatever she writes next but sadly this wasn't as enjoyable as I hoped。 Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

I had been a huge fan of Beth O'Leary's writing from her debut, The Flatshare to this heartwarming story that I loved, The Switch, I found both stories just completely enthralling, heartwarming, and immersive。 The Road Trip has been one of my most anticipated reads, and it sure did not disappoint。 In The Road Trip we have Addie and Dylan who met and fell in love in a French Villa where Addie was working as an on-site caretaker for the summer for her friend Cherry, and Dylan was one of the guests I had been a huge fan of Beth O'Leary's writing from her debut, The Flatshare to this heartwarming story that I loved, The Switch, I found both stories just completely enthralling, heartwarming, and immersive。 The Road Trip has been one of my most anticipated reads, and it sure did not disappoint。 In The Road Trip we have Addie and Dylan who met and fell in love in a French Villa where Addie was working as an on-site caretaker for the summer for her friend Cherry, and Dylan was one of the guests of the villa。 But their relationship ended two years ago and neither had kept in touch or had seen each other, until the fortuitous accidental meeting。 Dylan literally in an accident rear ends the mini Addie was driving。 Fortunately, the damage to her car was minimal while Dylan's car had to be towed。 They found that they were all off to Scotland for Cherry's wedding and to get there on time, they had to all carpool and make the road trip together to Scotland。 In the car were Addie and her sister Deb, Dylan and his friend Marcus, and Rodney whom they met in Facebook who was also invited to the wedding。 The motley crew of characters sure made this read a delight and crazy funny。 But what I enjoyed the most were the flashbacks to the time in France when Addie and Dylon first met as the THEN chapters, and the wonderful way O'Leary weaved this second chance romance where they both were able to work out their relationship as the NOW chapters。 In O'Leary's beautiful style with charming characters and dialogue, I found this book both heartwarming, funny and just overall a lovely read。 。。。more

3。5 stars。Can forced proximity help a former couple recapture the magic or will it just make things worse? This is the question addressed in Beth O'Leary's new book, The Road Trip。Dylan and Addie were in love。 It was an intense relationship, but Dylan’s indecisiveness about his future and his constantly choosing his longtime best friend Marcus, who had wanted nothing more than to break them up from the start, dooms them。 But when a betrayal occurs, it shatters everything。Two years later, the 3。5 stars。Can forced proximity help a former couple recapture the magic or will it just make things worse? Have they changed that much? The story alternates between present and past, tracing the trajectory of their relationship and what brought them to this point。I’ve loved Beth O’Leary’s previous books, The Flat Share and The Switch, so much, so I had high hopes for The Road Trip as well。 I loved Dylan and Addie and their story, but much like the trip itself, the book took a long while to get going。 And honestly, Marcus was one of the most ridiculously insufferable characters and he took up far too much space in the story。 But in the end, I still got teary。 Lol。NetGalley and Berkely provided me with a complimentary advance copy of the book in exchange for an unbiased review。 Thanks for making it available! Big thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for my e-copy。 Beth O’Leary’s ‘The Road Trip’ offered a good dose of escapism, especially in times when travelling and road trips are not really a possibility (I wish they were!)。‘The Road Trip’ follows Addie and Deb, her sister, as they travel for their friend’s wedding from London to rural Scotland。 It was meant to be a perfect road trip, and a little escape for Deb – a new mother – but things don’t go to plan, when they end up being forced to share a Big thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for my e-copy。 Beth O’Leary’s ‘The Road Trip’ offered a good dose of escapism, especially in times when travelling and road trips are not really a possibility (I wish they were!)。‘The Road Trip’ follows Addie and Deb, her sister, as they travel for their friend’s wedding from London to rural Scotland。 It was meant to be a perfect road trip, and a little escape for Deb – a new mother – but things don’t go to plan, when they end up being forced to share a car with Dylan, Addie’s ex, Marcus, Dylan’s annoying friend, and Rodney, a random wedding guest who asked for a lift in the Facebook group。 Let’s talk about awkward。I really enjoyed the road trip dynamic, the struggles they encountered, and the awkwardness of being stuck in the car with your ex as well as other people who are making the situation often worse。 It’s been twenty months, and both Dylan and Addie are supposed to be over each other, only that they aren’t, and being stuck in the same car on the road to the wedding, brings back many happy and bad memories。 The road trip part of the book was entertaining, funny and a little awkward (as the situation dictated), and I had enjoyed it a lot, even if there were some ridiculous moments during it, especially at the end of the story。 I think I enjoyed the author’s style more than in ‘The Flatshare’ overall, but too many backstory elements were a little overwhelming。 It felt at times like you were reading two stories。 While some flashbacks could be useful in the story, I felt they often overpowered the main narrative and felt disruptive to it。 But overall, I have enjoyed the book, and I would recommend it to those looking for a little escape we all need sometimes。 。。。more

I ended up deciding to DNF this book at 40%。 I did not enjoy the development of either story, the original story of how Dylan and Addie met, and the present day of Dylan and Addie reconnecting as they road trip to their mutual friends wedding。 To be honest, I was bummed out with O'Leary's last book, The Switch so I was hoping it was a fluke and this was going to be a 5 star book。 It just felt very juvenile and shallow。 I ended up deciding to DNF this book at 40%。 I did not enjoy the development of either story, the original story of how Dylan and Addie met, and the present day of Dylan and Addie reconnecting as they road trip to their mutual friends wedding。 To be honest, I was bummed out with O'Leary's last book, The Switch so I was hoping it was a fluke and this was going to be a 5 star book。 It just felt very juvenile and shallow。 。。。more

This book switched back and forth in time from the beginning of Addie and Dylan’s relationship to 20 months after it ended。 I adored this book。 It was really good and I liked the alternating POVs。 It would descend into comedy at points which could either be funny or a little silly a few times。 But it was a really heartwarming book。 But sorry I think Marcus is unredeemable。 I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review。

"I catch sight of the expression of the car across from us on the motorway - a middle-aged woman in a cap, staring wideeyed at our car。 I glance back at the others and imagine what she's seeing。 A motley collection of twenty-somethings cheerfully crammed into a bright red Mini at half seven in the morning on a bank holiday Sunday。 She has no idea。 If one could harness secrets for energy, we wouldn't need petrol - we'd have enough grudges in this car to take us all the way to Scotland。"Half-siste "I catch sight of the expression of the car across from us on the motorway - a middle-aged woman in a cap, staring wideeyed at our car。 I glance back at the others and imagine what she's seeing。 A motley collection of twenty-somethings cheerfully crammed into a bright red Mini at half seven in the morning on a bank holiday Sunday。 She has no idea。 If one could harness secrets for energy, we wouldn't need petrol - we'd have enough grudges in this car to take us all the way to Scotland。"Half-sisters sparky and beautiful Addie and forthright and hilarious Deb Gilbert are travelling to friend Cherry's wedding in Scotland, when a chance encounter with Addie's ex, dreamy and easily-led Dylan and his toxic best friend Marcus leads to car-sharing。 One very long journey, breakdowns and lost passengers, combines with the occupants' shared and challenging history。 Why did Addie and Dylan split up if they were so perfect for one another and will they get back together?Another emotional read from this author, with a focus on Addie and Dylan's, the protagonists', romance and friendships。 The narrative is split between Then and Now and told from Addie's and Dylan's perspectives, so we understand their relationship - how it began and how it broke down。 With a cast of supporting and disruptive characters, all fully fleshed-out, this is an engaging and emotional read。 Themes of anxiety, depression and consent, along with Dylan and Marcus's unhealthy relationship and the fact that almost every character seemed to be beautiful and desirable, made this not my favourite of the author's works。 Although I imagine many will enjoy it。 Funny and romantic, but also frustrating and dark in parts。 Whilst I would have loved to have lived in the worlds of The Flatshare and The Switch, I don't fancy my chances with The Road Trip, I'm afraid。 。。。more
